A long time ago, a neighbour of ours who was a pipe fitter by trade used some bits of pipe to build the Mailbox of Doom. All industrial grade steel pipe, welded and set into another pipe so if it got hit by a vehicle it spun around. Of course it would spin all the way around and slam into the vehicle that stuck it. A friend of my sister got a new truck and was playing mailbox bingo or some such thing. He returned to school one Monday morning with a large dent in his truck and assured her she was correct about the solidity of her mailbox.

Well earlier this summer we got Word from the municipality. Ours was one of many mailboxes that had them concerned. It stuck to far out into the road (No it didn't) and we needed it replaced. The letter went on to say they would do this for us at no charge since it was their problem. They did this.

I just fished that mailbox out of a dense snow pack and spent a bad morning trying to rebuild the pole. You see the mailbox was struck not by the plow or it's blade but by the snow thrown by the blade so they weren't responsible as the law was written. The snow hit it so hard a screw 2 1/2 inches long and maybe 3/8 wide was physically ripped out of the post hard enough to deform the hole where it was mounted. I had to mount a piece of board to the top of the pole and secure that to the post in order to reattach the mailbox.

They took away the mailbox that could have taken the hit, replaced it with one that can't and then knocked it into the snow.
